MGLC Summer in Tivoli: Čompe, concert

Čompe are a Ljubljana-based band, formed in 1994. Their name comes from a dialect word for potatoes in the Trenta Valley and the Gail Valley (Ziljska dolina), but today it is largely synonymous with their music.

The band is considered one of the most singular on the Slovenian music scene. Their original music is based on the lyrics of Slovenian poets such as Dane Zajc, Milan Jesih, Edvard Kocbek and Andrej Rozman – Roza. Rather than following trends, they cultivate their own unique style, interweaving poetry and music.

A central role is played by the diatonic accordion and the distinctive vocal interpretation of Janez Škof, together shaping a recognisable soundscape. Their performances are playful, with a touch of cabaret and marked by a raw energy and an off-kilter cohesion.

Line-up: Janez Škof – diatonic accordion, vocals; Neža Zinajić – violin, vocals; Jure Boršič – alto saxophone, clarinet; Žiga Saksida – alto and baritone saxophone, vocals; Silvo Zupančič – guitar; Marjan Stanić – drums, percussion
