MGLC Curators Receive Awards from the Slovenian Museum Association

On the occasion of its 55th anniversary, the Slovenian Museum Association (SMS) has presented awards for outstanding achievements in various areas of museum work for the first time. Among the recipients are two curators at the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC): Lili Šturm, curator and museum councillor, who received a lifetime achievement award, and Karla Železnik, senior curator, who was honoured for her significant contribution to the field of museum work.

Lili Šturm received the lifetime achievement award in recognition of her long-standing professional work. Her work is distinguished by its lasting professional impact, innovative approach, commitment to accessibility and the inclusion of diverse audiences and dedication to the transmission of knowledge. As her work extends beyond her home institution and has made a significant contribution to the development of museum education both in Slovenia and internationally, the Education and Communication Section has honoured her with its highest professional award.

Karla Železnik received an award for her significant contribution to museum work in recognition of the demanding research involved in searching for and professionally processing visual materials for a publication marking the 70th anniversary of the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts. Through her expertise, precision and dedication to preserving documentary heritage, she has made a significant contribution to safeguarding the Biennale’s legacy.

The awards ceremony took place at the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, which also served as the original headquarters of the Slovenian Museum Association in 1972.

On this occasion, Uršula Menih Dokl, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, emphasised the special value of such awards, as they shed light on the dedicated – and often invisible – work that underpins the final results. After all, heritage remains alive thanks to the people who research, preserve and present it to the public.
