Winners of the 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts
At the opening of the 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts, the members of the International Jury, Tia Čiček (chair), Kevser Güler, Albertine Kopp, Francesco Manacorda and Apolonija Šušteršič, announced the prize winners of this edition of the Biennale.
The Grand Prize of the 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts went to Palestinian artist Noor Abed, whose practice explores the role of aesthetics in the staging of ritual and performance as a method of survival. Her work examines how ideology is embodied through movement within the framework of social choreography. She is particularly concerned with the relationship between movement and resistance, the role of collective rhythmic movement, and the potential influence that shared feelings can have on the creation and preservation of communities.
The jury justified its decision with the following words: "We award the Grand Prize of the 36th Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts to Noor Abed for addressing and embodying issues of choreography and the femme-identified positions within the context of current social and political developments – positions that allow these issues to be felt in profoundly bodily terms. The use of the stick as a method of self-defence – an extension of the body – proposes the hypothesis that 'performance' itself can be a method of survival. We would welcome the presentation of a new co-commissioned work, which would allow her to expand on this original practice and continue developing shared emotional experiences as tools for building and sustaining communities."
The Research Residency Award was presented to Gabi Dao, and a Special Mention was awarded to Maria Arnal.
We extend our sincere congratulations to all the award recipients!
