Sustainability is in the AiR
The project Sustainability is in the AiR (SAiR) aims to develop a model of sustainable management of residential centres to foster sustainable artistic practices and enhance career opportunities for residential artists. The project combines and enhances the operational strategies of four residential centres in Ljubljana, Prague, Madrid and Athens. The added value of the project lies in the development of sustainable studio practices and an extensive accompanying programme alongside the residential exchange.
The objectives of the project:
- to revive the activities of the residential centres in a sustainable way after the pandemic crisis,
- to bring artists into circulation and to create opportunities for artistic and social practices to intertwine,
- to develop a sustainable residential centre production process that provides artists with time and space, professional staff support and funding to create new artworks,
- to explore sustainable art practices and the infrastructural potential of the partner residencies and test their usefulness beyond the art world,
- to raise awareness of sustainable issues in a broader context.
The project will achieve its goals through artist residencies, knowledge exchange and public programmes. Five main target groups will benefit the most:
- residential artists (8),
- staff of partner institutions,
- professional associates,
- visitors and participants to the public programme,
- local communities.
The main outputs of the project are the residential exchanges (6 artists from abroad hosted in each centre and 2 local/national artists send to partner's countries, each for a period of three months) and the production of new works; knowledge exchange (online workshop cycle and development of a sustainable studio practice manual), a community engagement programme (48 events) with a final exhibition/presentation of the artists in residence project (4 chapter event).
Project partners and their roles
MGLC as the project coordinator will oversee the implementation of the project objectives, liaise with the partners, coordinate the residencies in all partner cities as well as support the residencies in Ljubljana. It will also collect information from the partners for marketing and media purposes, coordinate the marketing efforts of the partners, supervise the documentation process of the residencies and the engagement programme, and coordinate the partnership meetings.
Matadero Madrid as a beneficiary will support and implement the residencies in Madrid. Matadero will coordinate the workshop cycle as an online educational tool/platform for partners and professional associates. Matadero will conceptualise the workshop cycle (topics of the sessions, invitation of facilitators, documentation and archiving of the outcomes of the sessions). The sessions will be the cornerstones/foundations for the Manual for Sustainable Residential Programmes and Mobilities.
MeetFactory as a beneficiary will support and implement the residencies in Prague. MeetFactory will coordinate the production of the Manual (editing, design of the online publication, dissemination and promotion).
Snehta as a beneficiary will support and implement the residencies in Athens. Snehta will offer curatorial guidance for the exhibition/final project presentation by developing new models of sustainable strategies of presentation (production, dissemination and archiving).
